Winona Ryder earned international fame in the early ’90s with such films as Edward Scissorhands and Mermaids, for which she received her first Golden Globe nomination. The pinnacle of success came with Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) and The Age of Innocence (1993), which awards the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and received her first Oscar nomination and BAFTA Award . On 12 December 2001, Winona Ryder, who suffered from kleptomania, was stopped for shoplifting in department stores in Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue. From 2016 she is among the protagonists of the Netflix series Stranger Things, where she plays the character of Joyce Byers. Set in the eighties in a fictitious small town in Indiana called Hawkins, it focuses on those events linked to the mysterious disappearance of a child and the apparition of a girl with telekinetic powers escaped from a secret laboratory.
The first season was released on Netflix July 15, 2016, in all countries where the service is available. A second is scheduled for 2017.
The series has been positively received by critics, who praised the characterization of the characters, the cast and the atmosphere that pays homage to the science fiction films of the eighties.
