Oprah Winfrey movies and TV shows
Considered among the most powerful women in the world, Oprah Winfrey is best known for her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was the most popular program of its kind in history and aired from 1986 to 2011. Nicknamed the “Queen of all media“, has been ranked as the richest African-American individual of the twentieth century.
Graduated in Communication Sciences at the University of Tennessee, in 2013 she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama and honorary doctorates from the prestigious Duke and Harvard universities.
She is also active as an actress and film producer: in 1985 she debuted as an actress in the cult film The Color Purple, an interpretation for which she received the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, while in 2012 she was awarded the Humanitarian Award winner Jean Hersholt for her contribution to humanitarian causes.
In 2013 she was the co-star in The Butler, whose performance earned her a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Screen Actors Guild Award. Her other films include Beloved (1998) and Selma (2014), of which she is also a producer.
In 2018 she received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award – Golden Globe 2018.
From the beginning of her career, Oprah Winfrey showed a strong communicative charisma. In 1986 her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show (later abbreviated as Oprah) debuted on national networks: initially thought with a traditional cut, it was soon transformed by the strong personality of the presenter on one occasion to draw the public’s attention to social problems. In fact, the program won nine GLAAD Media Awards as the best talk show for having dealt with LGBT themes. Oprah also directly addresses issues and topics that closely affect her like sexual violence, drugs and family problems.
In many cases the topics or the cases dealt with during the show’s episodes become fashionable phenomena or subject of public debate as for example happens with the books presented during the transmission, which become instantaneously sales champions. It is not uncommon for Oprah’s position to be taken too seriously: at the time of the mad cow scandal, after declaring that she would no longer eat a hamburger in her life, she was accused by some farmers of having conditioned the meat market. The judge declared her not guilty because she could not be considered capable of causing the damage she was accused of. The success of the program is still such, but in November 2009 Oprah announces to its viewers that the next season of the show would be the last one, after twenty-five years. The final episode was broadcast on 9 September 2011.
In October 2011, the US magazine Forbes published the Entertainment’s Highest Earning Women, ranking of the women who have earned more in the last year, in which Winfrey is placed in first place thanks to a booty of 290 million dollars. Winfrey’s next move will be to completely switch to her cable channel called OWN and probably launch a new talk show.
Oprah Winfrey should have been called “Orpah“, but her family and friends did not know the correct pronunciation of the name and ended up calling her “Oprah”. Winfrey is also an entrepreneur: she founded an organization, The Angel Network, for assistance to the poor, a publishing house and a television network. She is also president of a television production company.
Her idol, her friend and her source of inspiration was Diana Ross, since the days of Supremes. Following a promise made to Nelson Mandela she has invested 40 million dollars to open a school for poor girls in South Africa, the “Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls“, located in the town of Henley-on-Klip, south of Johannesburg. At the Academy of Oprah Winfrey more than three thousand applications were received, in the end, 152 girls between the ages of 11 and 12 were admitted (but the college can accommodate up to 450). In order to pass the selection it was necessary to demonstrate that they have the right potential and above all a family budget not exceeding 787 dollars a month.
In 2006 the comic actress Debra Wilson appeared as Oprah in the film Scary Movie 4, bringing on stage a “remake” of the famous show that saw guest Tom Cruise.
At the beginning of 2007, Forbes magazine declared her the world’s richest show woman, with assets of one billion and 500 million dollars. In 2010, Forbes always declared her the second.
