In 1997 Laura Prepon participated in the casting of That ’70s Show, getting the part of Donna Pinciotti for all 8 seasons, from 1998 to 2006, on the Fox television network. Prepon has appeared in comedies such as A Woman of Property and Ascension Day while in New York. Laura Prepon has also worked as a model in her youth, living for a while in Milan, Paris and Brazil. During her break from That ’70s Show, Prepon worked on the independent film The Pornographer: A Love Story. The film tells the story of an obsessive relationship between the director of the movie and the actress. In 2001 she had the first chance to work as a director in the independent film Southlander, a Steve Hanft comedy / musical played by Beck, Beth Orton and Hank Williams III. She also starred in the movie Slackers (2002). She was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2002 for her role in That ’70s Show.
She was on the cover of Maxim for two times. In 2002 she was named one of the “102 Sexiest Women in the World” in Stuff magazine, and in 2005 by Maxim magazine as one of the “Hot 100“. She gave voice to a marine Space Command of the United Nations in the Halo 2 video game, released in 2004. In 2005 she starred in the movie Karla, the true story of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka (her wife), a couple who have kidnapped, sexually abused and killed three young girls. This role marks a contrast to her usual lighthearted roles.
Prepon has joined the cast of the television series October Road, which debuted March 15, 2007, but was later canceled. Prepon in 2009 she appeared in three episodes of the series How I Met Your Mother, in the role of Karen (first girlfriend of Ted Mosby), while in 2010 she appeared in the episode Private Lives of House, M.D. In early 2011, she appeared in an episode of Castle, playing an actress who was studying for the role of Nikki Heat, one of the Castle characters. In February of the same year it launched the new sitcom broadcast on NBC’s Are You There, Chelsea?, with her as protagonist.
In the middle of 2012 Laura Prepon has signed for the role of Alex Vause, who deals drugs and is former girlfriend of Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling), on the hit Netflix Orange is the New Black. In the summer of 2015 she announced her new project The Stash Plan. It is a Health book that describes a diet of 21 days based mainly on soups. This project is co-writer with nutritionist Elizabeth Troy, which Prepon credited with helping her to “heal for the first time in all the years of reading health books, diet and fitness, seeing doctors, taking a lot of pills and spending insane amounts of money in all these activities”.
Regard the Orange is the New Black’s story, Piper Chapman is a woman from Connecticut, resident in New York, who is sentenced to serve fifteen months to Litchfield, a women’s federal prison run by the Federal Department of Corrections, for transporting a suitcase full of money of illicit origin for Alex Vause, an international drug trafficker and a time her lover. That offense happened ten years before Pipe entering in prison and in the years between the beginning of her trial and conviction, she has managed to build a well-off life, law-abiding, with her new boyfriend Larry Bloom, New York in the upper middle class.
While in jail, Piper reunited with Alex Vause (which would have made the name of Chapman during her trial, causing her arrest), which, despite an initial hatred, gets closer. Besides them, living so many other women in prison, whose stories are told through the use of flashbacks.
