She was born in Los Mochis, Mexico, on March 3, 1964 by María Elena Cairo Martínez, a Mexican psychoanalyst and real estate entrepreneur, and by Raymond Herring, a wealthy Mexican farmer who was the son of an Austrian immigrant and a German immigrant . The two divorced in 1971. Laura lived her first ten years in Mexico before her family moved to Texas. At the age of sixteen she went to study in Switzerland at the prestigious Aiglon College. She then returned to Texas and entered the world of beauty contests until she won the Miss USA title in 1985 for the first time it was assigned to a Spaniard.

Laura spent the following year traveling for Asia and Europe and doing volunteering in India. In 1987, she married Count Carl-Eduard von Bismarck, divorced in 1989.
