Gemma Chan is an actress and former British model of Chinese descent. She plays the character of Minn-Erva in the new Captain Marvel movie.
She is mainly known in England for her various theatrical roles and for her role in Humans, a remake of the famous Swedish science fiction TV show Real Humans where she plays Anita, a “synth” (a woman-like robot) programmed to do housework with the characteristic of experiencing human emotions.

Boden and Fleck were announced to direct the film in the April 2017, and soon Robertson-Dworet was also in charge of the script, which draws on elements from the 1971 saga of the Kree-Skrull war. Filming began in January 2018, with the start of the production phase in March and the setting located in California and Louisiana; filming ended in July of the same year.
In 2016 Gemma Chan appears in a cameo in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, prequel to the Harry Potter film saga, directed by David Yates.
Her first movie in which she starred are When Evil Calls, directed by Johannes Roberts. After three years, in 2009, the year in which she definitively established herself as an actress, thanks also to her debut on television, Chan was directed by Stuart Hazeldine in Exam, a psychological thriller nominated for best work by a debut at the BAFTA awards 2010 and the Raindance Award during the British Independent Film Awards 2009. The film is set entirely in an exam room, where eight people (including a Chinese girl played by Chan) have 80 minutes to pass a test to be able to join of a powerful pharmaceutical company. But once they discovered that the sheets, on which they would have to fill out a specific questionnaire, are actually completely white, this will lead the eight candidates to despair and lash out among themselves to understand what the question is to answer.
A human rights advocate, Gemma Chan participated in a short film in 2008 for Amnesty International for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In 2010 the actress takes part in three other films such as Pimp, a thriller directed and interpreted by Robert Cavanah, Shanghai, a historical film directed by Mikael Håfström and Submarine, a dramatic comedy directed by Richard Ayoade, where Chan has a small cameo in the role of Kim-Lin. The film tells the story of Oliver Tate (played by the young Craig Roberts), a shy fifteen year old who must try in every way to save the marriage of his parents, now in crisis for some time.
In the following years other films will follow where Chan will be involved only as an appearance as The Double, again directed by Richard Ayoade with Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska; London Fields (2015), a thriller film based on the novel by Martin Amis and directed by Mathew Cullen; and Belles Familles (2015), French film by Jean-Paul Rappeneau, with Mathieu Amalric.
She is also in the cast of Crazy Rich Asians, directed by Jon M. Chu and based on the novel by Kevin Kwan.
