Vikander is 27 and in the film plays Gerda, the painter Einar Wegener‘s wife (who throughout the film becomes Lili Elbe, a woman and is starred by Eddie Redmayne). It was her first nomination and won by beating Rooney Mara (Carol), Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight).

Vikander was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, and very young began to be a dancer, moving from Gothenburg to Stockholm just to study ballet (and studying dance in New York during the summer). As a teenager, she also began a parallel career as an actress, and because of an injury that prevented her for many months to dance began to make acting her main activity. In 2008, at 20, she became relatively popular in Sweden starring in Andra Avenyn, a television drama rather popular there.

Vikander had her first starring role in 2010 in the Swedish film Pure, directed by Lisa Langseth. Thanks to the movie has won some major Swedish film awards and began to get noticed by critics of her country’s cinema. Two years later she had her first role in Hollywood, in Anna Karenina by Joe Wright. In the same year Vikander starred in a major film co-produced by Sweden, Denmark and the Czech Republic – Royal Affair – where she played Caroline Matilda of Great Britain, the wife of the king of Denmark lived in the late eighteenth century.

In recent years Vikander has had parts in The Fifth Estate – Bill Condon’s film about Julian Assange – and the drama Testament of Youth. She also had a starring role in Operation U.N.C.L.E., an “action comedy” directed by Guy Ritchie. Vikander also starred in Ex Machina, the film that won the Oscar for Best Special Effects, and that did make a great leap in popularity: in the movie plays Ava, a humanoid robot equipped with artificial intelligence. In the near future Vikander star in Bourne 5, the new film on the agent Bourne played by Matt Damon, and The Light Between Oceans, an adaptation of the eponymous novel, set in Australia after World War II. In The Light Between Oceans she will play with Michael Fassbender, which is said to have a relationship since several months.
