Aja Naomi King was born in the California city of Los Angeles and raised in Walnut. She studied theater art at the University of California at Santa Barbara and at Yale University, where she performed in famous works such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Little Shop of Horrors and Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.
At the beginning of her career, Aja appeared in several short films. In 2010, instead, she debuted in television as a guest star in Blue Bloods, and later in Person of Interest, The Blacklist, and Deadbeat. In 2011 she gets her first role in a film, namely Violet Wister’s Damsels in Distress. She received greater fame in 2012 when she was hired to play the role of Cassandra Kopelson in the television series Emily Owens, M.D., canceled after only one season. In the same year, she was chosen to take part in the drama Four and, along with the rest of the cast, won the Audience Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
Since 2014 she has played the role that made her famous throughout the world: in fact, she joined the main cast of the acclaimed US television series How to Get Away with Murder, produced by Shonda Rhimes and broadcast by ABC. In it, she plays the character of Michaela Pratt, one of the five students of the criminal law professor and defense lawyer interpreted by Viola Davis. The following year the film The Rewrite was distributed in US cinemas, thanks to which Aja had the opportunity to work alongside actors of the caliber of Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei.
Also in 2015, the actress was chosen as the co-star in the award-winning film The Birth of a Nation. It deals with the slave revolt captained by Nat Turner and erupted in Southampton County in Virginia in August 1831 and is composed of a choral cast that includes Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller, Gabrielle Union, and Aunjanue Ellis. King’s interpretation was welcomed so positively that Variety proclaimed her as a “new rising star“, even being designated as a potential Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress, even though she did not receive the nomination.
In 2017 Aja Naomi King made official her acquaintance with Alfred Enoch. The two met on the set of the first season of How to Get Away With Murder which turned out to be a public success right from the first few episodes. The agreement between the two performers has not escaped the fans of the series since their debut on the small screen.
