Rooney Mara has received top honors for movies The Social Network and A Nightmare on Elm Street. In 2011, she played Lisbeth Salander, the star of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Her performance has received critical acclaim, so much so that she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. In 2013, she starred in the thriller Side Effects and in the independent drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. In 2015, she received praise for her role as co-star in Carol, for which she won the Cannes Best Actress Award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA nomination. For the same film she received her second nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
She is also known for her charitable work and overseing the charity Uweza Foundation, which supports the empowerment programs for children and families in the slums of Kibera, in Nairobi, Kenya, one of the largest slums in Africa.
Born in Bedford (New York), is the daughter of Timothy Christopher Mara, an American of Italian descent, vice president of the New York Giants, and real estate agent Kathleen McNulty, American of Irish descent. She has two brothers, Daniel and Conor, and is the younger sister of actress Kate Mara and the granddaughter of Wellington Mara.
In 2003 she graduated from Fox Lane High School, before embarking on a study trip to South America, where she spent four months visiting Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. After having spent a year at the George Washington University, she moved to New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where she studied psychology and international social policies.
