Eleni Foureira is an Albanian Greek naturalized singer. She began her career in 2007 as part of the Mystique girl group, only to leave the group in 2009 and find success as a soloist. She represented Cyprus at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with the song Fuego ranking at the second place after Netta from Israel with the Toy song.
Daughter of Marjeta, a seamstress, and Kristaq Fureraj, a mason, Foureira was born in a city in southern Albania. She has two sisters, Ioanna and Margarita, and a brother, Giorgos. When she was still a child her family left Albania because of the civil war, she settled in the Athenian district of Kallithea. Eleni has shown a passion for music from an early age, learning to play guitar and working in the theater world for three years.
Eleni began her musical career as a member of the Mystique female group together with Alkmini Chatzigianni and Maria Makri. They released their debut single Se alli selida in 2007, and they continued to publish music until their dissolution in 2009. Hence the singer signed a recording contract as a soloist with Universal Music Greece, the same label that managed the Mystique. The singer released her eponymous debut album in December 2010. Her next two albums, Ti poniro mou zitas (2012) and Anemos agapis (2014), were released on the Minos EMI label and reached respectively the seventh and third placed in the Greek ranking. The fourth album, Vasilissa, was released in 2017 on the Panik Records label and reached the fifteenth place in the standings.
The singer has tried several times to represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest. The first attempt dates back to 2010, when she took part in the national selection process singing Kivotos tou Noe in duet with Manos Pyrovolakis and positioning himself second. In 2016, the year in which the song representative of Greece would be selected by the national broadcasting agency ERT, Eleni proposed the song Come Tiki Tam, which however was discarded in favor of the Argo. On 1 February 2018 it was confirmed that Eleni Foureira had been selected internally by the CyBC as a Cypriot representative for that year’s edition with the song Fuego.
