Alexandra Maquet, well known as Alma, was born on September 27, 1988 in Lyon (Rhône, France), is a French singer-songwriter, singer and pianist.
Born in Lyon, Alexandra Maquet is the eldest of a family of four sisters. She travels extensively with her family and lives in Lille, Brussels and then in Paris. As a child, she dreams of becoming a singer and starts playing the piano. Her parents moved to the United States when she was 15 years old. Her father then worked for an American company.
She returned to France at the age of 17 and enrolled at the IESEG School of Management1. In the course of her studies in commerce, she made several internships in Brazil where she lived for a year, then moved to Milan in Italy before coming to Paris. She speaks French, English, Italian and Portuguese.
In 2012, after the death of a childhood friend, Alma began writing and composing songs.
On December 1, 2013, Alexandra Maquet (not yet known by her stage name Alma) joined the singing troupe of the musical show Les Chansons d’abord, presented by Natasha St-Pier and broadcast on France 3, on June 2014. In this issue, Céline Dion is the guest of honor and Alexandra interprets Entre nous by Chimène Badi. She met the singer-songwriter Nazim Khaled, who arrived in the singing troupe a month later, in January 2014. Among the troupe were Alma, Camille Lou, Lisa Angell, Sonia Lacen, Alexandre Balduzzi (former second season nominee of Star Academy), Flo Malley (former participant of the 1st season of The Voice) and Dumè.
Her first single, La chute est tard, is released in June 2016. She made her first concert in Malaunay (Seine-Maritime) in the first part of Amir in September 2016.
In September 2016, Alma meets with the ladies who secretly plan to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. At the beginning of 2017, they propose the song Requiem (written and composed by Nazim Khaled) to the French selection committee for Eurovision. Alma is selected and announced on February 9 by France 2 as the representative of France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song Requiem, in a remixed version for the occasion. She thus succeeds Amir, ranked 6th at the Eurovision 2016 Competition with the title J’ai cherché and for whom she ensured several first concerts in 2016. Alma interprets initially Requiem in French but also saves another version which contains a few sentences in English and variants in the lyrics in French as well as in the melody. The images of the clip shot in Paris are the same for the two versions. She also made a version with MB14.
She says that it was the death of her first love that prompted her to sing and participate in Eurovision.
Alma’s debut album entitled My Skin Loves is released on May 5, 2017.
On May 13, 2017 in Kiev, Ukraine, during the final of the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, Alma interprets Requiem in French with passages in English. She moved to 26th and last position (she is the first representative of France to pass last from Ortal in 2005). After the cumulative votes of the professional juries and the public of the 42 countries, Alma ranks 12th out of 26, with 135 points.
